Members connected over the frustrating and often dismissed symptom of rectal mucus with IBS, with many expressing relief that they are not alone in experiencing it and frustration that their doctors offer little help beyond saying it is just part of the condition. Several members shared strategies that have provided relief, including acupuncture, the herb berberine, following a SIBO-specific FODMAP diet, eliminating white starchy foods like potatoes and rice, and taking Imodium proactively before meals to prevent diarrhea. A recurring theme was the unpredictable nature of IBS symptoms, with many noting that flare-ups can happen regardless of what they eat and often strike without warning, leading to embarrassing accidents and constant vigilance.

I use Imodium for multiple symptoms. I've gotten to where I take it before a meal because if I eat and then get gas, I'm done for. Once I get gas I know diarrhea is next. Just in the past week I ruined 2 pair of pants because I didn't get to the bathroom fast enough. Just glad I was home. It doesn't seen to matter what I eat. Anything can set it off.

My doctor says there is no way to stop it.

I can relate. Doesn’t matter what I eat. And doesn’t happen right away. Happens the next day!

I have had three acupuncture treatments in the past 2 1/2 weeks, and at the same time started taking the herb berberine. I also cut out white starchy foods (all pototoes, rice, corn products) at the advice of the acupuncturist.

Since then, my diarrhea has ceased, and it's been days since I had a bowel movement that was entirely mucus. The prescription I got from the gastroenterolist did nothing for me. His two bits of helpful advice were to try the fodmap diet and to take Imodium instead of Pepto-Bismal.

So it may depend on your symptoms and diagnosis whether it's treatable, but for me, it has been treatable.
