Has anyone found a Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) has helped IBS-D symptoms?

A myIBSteam Member asked a question 💭

Suspecting a possible ulcer, the doctor prescribed a PPI for 6 weeks. While taking it my IBS symptoms subsided. After I went off this drug, they returned. To test it, I started taking it again and once again relief of symptoms.

Has anyone had a GI doctor recommend this for IBS?

Members responded with interest and support to someone who discovered a PPI helped their IBS-D symptoms, with many sharing that PPIs like Pantoprazole and Omeprazole are commonly prescribed for GERD and stomach acid but rarely tried for IBS specifically. Several members offered practical insights, including that timing matters (one member found taking it before dinner more effective than morning), that Protonix tends to be better tolerated long-term than other PPIs, and that the original poster successfully advocated with their GP to continue the prescription despite initial surprise. A recurring theme was empowerment through self-experimentation and physician collaboration, with members celebrating small victories and sharing alternative medication combinations their own doctors had prescribed.

Gramybear, my doctor prescribed Pantoprazole 40mg. There are OTC versions but they are slightly different chemically so I preferred to stick with what I already knew was working. Not an expensive drug and no major issues with long term use. Good luck giving it a try.

I am on one for quite a while it does seem to help if I take half hour before dinner. When I took it in the morning I had more trips to the bathroom!

They are both PPI. More people tolerate Protonix for years.
Good luck Judee!

Thank you for the response. I was tested and treated for all types of bacteria when it started years ago. GI doctor's only suggestion was the FODMAP diet. Unfortunately, it wasn't helpful for me. Too many inconsistencies of which foods to avoid. Plus, I have a strange trigger of any tap water outside my home. Being on this drug has been the only relief I've experienced in 8 years. Hoping my doctor will agree to keep me on it.
