Overview
Ibsrela is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome with constipation (IBS-C) in adults. It should not be used in children younger than 18 years old due to risks of serious dehydration, and it is contraindicated in children under 6. Ibsrela is also known by its drug name, tenapanor.

Tenapanor belongs to a class of drugs called sodium/hydrogen exchanger 3 (NHE3) inhibitors. It works by reducing the absorption of sodium (salt) in the intestines, which increases water content in the gut and helps soften stools (poop) and improve bowel movements.

How do I take it?
Prescribing information states that Ibsrela is taken as an oral tablet, twice daily. It should be taken immediately before breakfast or the first meal of the day and immediately before dinner. Ibsrela should be taken exactly as prescribed by a healthcare provider.

Side effects
Common side effects of Ibsrela include diarrhea, abdominal distension (bloating), flatulence (gas), and dizziness.

Rare but serious side effects may include severe diarrhea, which can lead to dehydration. If this occurs, treatment should be stopped, and the person should be rehydrated.
