Sarafem (Fluoxetine) for IBS

Overview
Sarafem is a prescription drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Sarafem is also known by its drug name, Fluoxetine.

Sarafem is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class. Sarafem is believed to work by changing the balance of neurotransmitters in the brain.

How do I take it?
Sarafem is generally taken once a day.

Sarafem comes in tablet form.

Side effects
The FDA-approved label for Sarafem lists common side effects including cold symptoms, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, insomnia, increased appetite, weight gain, upset stomach, difficulty achieving orgasm, and decreased interest in sex.

Rare but serious side effects listed for Sarafem include worsening depression, suicidal thoughts or behavior, and serotonin syndrome, which may be life-threatening.
