A myIBSteam Member asked a question 💭
Romford

I had my appointment this morning with a dietician for the FODMAP diet. He told me I am not allowed to drink squash because of the sweetners in it. The one I use has the following ingredients:

Water, Fruit Juice from Concentrate (10%) (Apple 9%, Blackcurrant 1%), Acid (Citric Acid), Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate), Flavourings, Colour (Anthocyanins), Preservatives (Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Metabisulphite (Sulphites)), Sweeteners (Aspartame, Sodium Saccharin)

Members rallied around someone navigating the confusing early days of a FODMAP diet, sharing practical advice and encouragement about allowed foods and drinks. Several members recommended the Monash University FODMAP app as a reliable resource, suggested alternatives like gluten-free bread, almond or oat milk, and monk fruit sweetener, and encouraged calling the dietitian back for clarification on conflicting guidance about yogurt and squash. A recurring theme was the importance of individual tolerance, with many noting that artificial sweeteners can be gut triggers, and emphasizing patience and self-compassion during the challenging elimination phase.

Sweeteners are the worst for my gut-- they fermented into horrible gas....

Do you have any food allergies or food sensitivity?
I am allergic to sulfites and Stevia plus have gluten, aspartame and soy intolerance so most breads are off limits to me

You might try gluten free bread which most stores have GF section...if you have a lactose allergy then try almond or oat milk and I think they make yogurt and ice cream too

The nutritionist should be trained to help you with the fodmap diet but it sounds like it was a confusing visit . Maybe you should call the nutritionist back for further clarification. You could also research more on the internet
